a full set

4 plates
4 bowls
4 dainty saucers balancing elegant cups
on the side board with coffee pot waiting
4 bread dishes with butter knives balanced
4 napkins, set on the side
4 goblets above
4 salad forks and 4 dinner forks
4 soup spoons waiting for the tureen
4 table spoons
4 knives waiting for the main course
4 chairs pushed under the
well-laid table, linen cloth like a field of wildflowers sprinkled with embroidery

dainty pink roses with halos of silver
the lingering memory
of grandmothers’ meals
so many meals crafted of love
good times or sad the table was laid
the china set out
the silver polished
and gathered round
the people finished
the set

I wrote this in haste, and scheduled for later publication. If I have time and energy, I will rethink it. But no promises…

the baby stood uncertainly
looked around from new heights
and sat down suddenly

the child walked admiring the sights
learning more than books
sleeping without fear sans lights

the teen gave parents dirty looks
but secretly admired
the limits and returned to books

the adult was tired
and sat down wearily
to read the news before it expired

Rain in April

hard
driving
pounding
thumps

gentle
swishing
soothing
taps

here
there
again
between the earth
and the clouds

a rainbow

Another Monday
Another poem
Another memory
Made
And saved

Do you recall
That first
Sidelong glance
In the presence of friends
Who pretended not to notice?

Slipping in quietly
Under the wire
Through the letter slot
Over the fence
And under cover
Of darkness
The lover
And poem
Both find the way
Home

Poetry Month 2010 # 24

I wrote this poem during an activity in my master’s program. Direction below.

Triangulation (Jubilation)

Thunder sings under earth
Rainbow plays over lake
I find myself in the middle

We were presented with a “word bowl” and asked to randomly pull several words, then generate a poem using any or all of the words and including as many more as we liked. The words I pulled for this poem were triangle, thunder, under, earth, sing, rainbow, play, lake, find. I am pleased with the result! I chose to use the word “triangulation” because it relates to finding a third point based on knowing two others, and added Jubilation to the title to reflect how the poem itself made me feel.

23 poems pinned up on the wall
23 poems down
23 poems pinned up on the wall…
7 small verses to go!

And one more week of classes before I have an unplanned “week off” (the week scheduled for practice teaching didn’t work for my practicum teacher, so I will have to take actual class days instead). And then… another month and I will be done. Almost halfway. It feels good to count down. I am counting down for summer, for sure!

Earth day is today, the poem was written yesterday in a hurry (bet you couldn’t tell). I will look out the windows and wish I were closer to nature. I am remembering how precious this planet is, and how beautiful. I hope you get to spend some time with it today!
