Speedy Fingers!

Sometimes it’s nice to do something that isn’t strictly intellectual/academic. This is a cute online test — measures typing speed and returns both speed and number of errors.

I am able to type with the touch typing system

Here were my first results:

You reached 218 points, so you achieved position 9444 on the ranking list

You type 322 characters per minute
You have 51 correct words and
you have 3 wrong words

So I type about 48 words per minute (I know I type faster when my nails are trimmed and I am not distracted by the TV). I probably get to about 55 or 60 wpm on a good day.

Geeks, Nerds and other Denizens of Cyberspace

This cute test was on both nrkii and featherbee’s websites! So of course I played lemming and took it. Twice. Same result both times. I am, apparently, Pure Nerd, scoring 82 % Nerd, 21% Geek, 34% Dork

THE NERD? GEEK? OR DORK? TEST

This test tracked 3 variables. How my score compared to the other people’s:

Higher than 93% on nerdiness
Higher than 24% on geekosity
Higher than 58% on dork points

Note: the previous is significantly less exact than the Geek Test, one version of which can be found here. My score on that is, predictably, quite low, today I scored 27.61341%, making me a Total Geek, far below my dear Tom’s!

April Foolery

This was a fun little quiz, and I think it got it pretty close to the mark… and the alternate form suggested for me, “blank verse,” is also pretty close to the way I see myself.

I am the sonnet, never quickly thrilled;
Not prone to overstated gushing praise
Nor yet to seething rants and anger, filled
With overstretched opinions to rephrase;
But on the other hand, not fond of fools,
And thus, not fond of people, on the whole;
And holding to the sound and useful rules,
Not those that seek unjustified control.
I’m balanced, measured, sensible (at least,
I think I am, and usually I’m right);
And when more ostentatious types have ceased,
I’m still around, and doing, still, alright.
In short, I’m calm and rational and stable –
Or, well, I am, as much as I am able.

Again heisted from featherbee…

My pirate name is:

Calico Ethel Flint

Often indecisive, you can’t even choose a favorite color. You’re apt to follow wherever the wind blows you, just like Calico Jack Rackham, your namesake. Like the rock flint, you’re hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you’re easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

This one is hard!

GRE words — some of the definitions seem a bit sketchy to non-existent; but they give you the first two letters, the number of spaces and a definition. You need to type in the rest of the word. If you get stuck, there is a hint button — and if you mistype a letter, the space goes red. However, to get more points, you need to get it right the first time without hints.

good luck!

How well do you know yourself?

I like taking little quizzes that tell me about myself. It goes along with the introspection in which I engage while doing repetitive tasks…

There are a couple of scientific studies (as opposed to the recreational quizzes) about preferences, thinking and prejudice online. One that seems pretty well put together (but can be time-consuming) is Project Implicit a joint Harvard-University of Washington study.

The more people who take their quizzes, the better their data set. Though I wonder — people who are likely to take these quizzes probably are better-educated, and certainly are literate and have access to the internet (which implies at least resourcefulness, if not moderate to high income level). What would these quizzes show if they were taken by people from a wider demographic?
